How To Shade Sail

May 23, 2025 | Products

We have shown you shade sails for gardens, patios, decks, pools, walkways, courtyards and more. As in each, the shade sail shapes, colors, size and placement are designed to fit and complement the particularities of each location.

In the Southwest, art is found everywhere, from the ruins of ancient pueblos and pictograph monuments to contemporary urban spaces. Here we have fabricated an array of shade sails to both protect the entry steps to this rooftop restaurant, invite anticipation of a fun outing experience, and draw focus by framing the space in colors that draw from the existing wall mural. There is no one right way to do this! Shapes and colors of the shade sails can vary, each sail can overlap the next, and all are secured to existing posts and the exterior wall of the building. The shade sails also serve to shield the eyes entering bright sunlight from a darker doorway, potentially saving a guest from stumbling on the steps coming in or out. While this rooftop restaurant is an iconic destination and is open all year with the addition of heaters, the shade sails are not intended to be in place year ‘round. When the weather cools to winter temperatures and the threat of snow, the shade sails are taken down as they are not constructed to bear the weight of winter snows.
